Ancient Rainforests – From Gondwana to the Vanua

Author: Dr Phillip B. Roös, PhD
Description:

"Ancient Rainforests – From Gondwana to the Vanua" is a comprehensive catalogue that chronicles the works of Dr Phillip B. Roös, documenting his exploration of the Otways rainforests in Australia and the extensive tropical rainforests of Vanua Levu, Fiji. This publication examines remnants of ancient Gondwanaland and the Vanua, highlighting a unique 'Nature Language.' Through paintings and scrolls, it maps ecological memory and energy, unveiling intricate patterns and ancestral knowledge embedded within forest landscapes. The collection serves as an ecological narrative, aiming to foster reconnection between individuals and the land, between the body and the biosphere, spirit and place, and being and belonging.

The project commenced in 2020 within the Otway Forests, where Dr Roös engaged in prolonged observation to document, sketch, analyse, and paint the environment. His methodology encompassed visual studies, immersive sensory experiences, and meditative mappings. Over five years, this research extended to Fiji’s Vanua Levu, where he continued his work by integrating natural elements such as soil and creek water into his artistic process. The resulting collection comprises large paper scrolls, paintings, drawings, sketches, and detailed site notes.
